Bacteriostatic water (often called BAC water) is sterile water mixed with 0.9% benzyl alcohol, designed to dilute or dissolve medications and peptides for injection while stopping bacteria from growing inside the vial.
What is BAC Water?
- Composition: High-purity water for injection combined with 0.9% benzyl alcohol (9 mg per mL)
- How it works: The benzyl alcohol acts as a preservative that inhibits bacterial growth, allowing you to puncture the rubber stopper multiple times to make repeated withdrawals from the same multi-dose vial
- Difference from sterile water: Regular Sterile Water for Injection (SWFI) contains no preservatives and must be discarded immediately after a single use
